“Programming with GitHub Copilot”

The Riggs Lab hosting a series of free workshops in 2025 through the Link Lab at the University of Virginia. Attendees are also invited to participate in a paid research study if they are eligible: UVA IRB-SBS 7557 (PI: Sara Riggs).

Important Note for CS Students: If you heard about this workshop in a UVA CS course, attending is entirely voluntary and is not required, related to, or graded for your course in any way.

Workshop Content

The workshops will give some background about GitHub Copilot and then show hands-on demonstrations about how to use it. Topics covered include:

• Drawbacks of GitHub Copilot
• How to use GitHub Copilot
• Alternatives to GitHub Copilot

• How do I get into the Link Lab?
  • Approach Olsson Hall from Engineer’s way, go up the outdoor steps, go inside, enter the right of the two inside doors, then turn left, left, and right to reach the arena
  • Go to Olsson Hall’s ground (0) or first (1), use the stairs or elevator to go up to 2, ring the video doorbell to the right of the entrance to ask to be let through the locked doors
• Who can attend?
  • UVA affiliates (students, staff, faculty, and corporate partners)
  • Invited guests of UVA affiliates
• Do I need to pay or register?
  • NO- seating is first come, first served
• Can I attend without participating in UVA IRB-SBS 7557?
  • YES
• Can I participate in UVA IRB-SBS 7557 without attending?
  • NO
