University of Virginia IRB-SBS 7557

The Riggs Lab is looking for volunteers to participate in a study to better understand the how human programming teams compare to human-AI programming teams. You work on Python programming-related tasks alone and in teams with AI and another person while wearing a heart rate monitor and finger-worn skin sensor. Participating entails the following steps:

  1. Online interest form
  2. Free one-hour educational workshop about programming with Artificial Intelligence
  3. 10-15 minute online or in-person eligibility screening
  4. ~2.5 hour study session consisting of team Python programming and questionnaires
  5. One week gap where you do not study or research anything related to Python programming
  6. ~1.25 hour study session where you take a retention test

Participants who complete the full study will be paid $7 per half hour for steps 4. and 6. in digital gift card credit. Each participant in the top 15% of performers will also get an extra $10 of digital gift card credit.

Important Note for CS Students: If you heard about this study in a UVA CS course, participating is entirely voluntary and is not required, related to, or graded for your course in any way. Your instructor will not be given any details about your participation or lack thereof.

Participants must:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be fluent in written and verbal English
  • Self-identify as having a beginner or intermediate but not advanced Python programming ability
  • Be fluent in English within the context of Python programming
  • Be affiliated with or invited by someone affiliated with the University of Virginia
  • Submit an interest form
  • Attend a free one-hour educational workshop about programming with Artificial Intelligence
  • Attend and pass a 10-15 minute in-person eligibility screening at UVA
  • Be available and present in Charlottesville, VA for two in-person study slots one week apart between June and November 2025
  • Be willing to abstain from studying or researching Python programming for one week between study sessions
